Health Center Programs

Methodist Health System Foundation established its School Based Health Center (SBCH) program to provide outstanding medical and mental health resources and services necessary to promote and improve the academic development of students through collaboration, advocacy, and education within the community.

Goals of the School Based Health Center include, but are not limited to:

  • Improve access to primary health care
  • Provide quality medical intervention (physical and mental health care)
  • Coordinate care with community partners
  • Provide health and wellness education for students and parents
  • Reduce teen pregnancy and STD rates by advocating sexual abstinence, screening, and treatment

MHSF operates two school based health centers in St. Bernard Parish with services at one additional location:

Chalmette High School, School Based Health Center

  • Opened in August 2007 as the first school based health center in St. Bernard Parish
  • Quickly became an integral part of the health care system in St.Bernard following Hurricane Katrina
  • Currently sees an average of 50 students per day during school hours
    • More than 90% of students return to class following a visit which avoids missed academic instruction and allows parents to remain at work
  • The SBCH team of professionals includes a physician serving as a Medical Director, Nurse Practitioners, Registered Nurses, Social Workers, a Medical Assistant and a Center Coordinator
  • Services include:
    • Chronic illness management, preventive care, acute illness treatment
    • Comprehensive sports physicals
    • Health screenings (diabetes, hypertension, obesity, etc.)
    • Routine lab work
    • Vision and hearing screening

The SBHC involves parents in the care of their child and makes referrals to specialists when warranted.

Chalmette High School, School Based Health Center operates in partnership with St. Bernard Parish Schools. The center's funding is a collaborative effort of Methodist Health System Foundation and the State of Louisiana's Office of Public Health's Adolescent School Health Program.
